Dr. Alex Webb Department of Earth Sciences, HKU

Part (1) of this talk will offer a brief overview of what’s going on in our research group. Recently a number of new members have joined us, such that we are now working on a widening range of problems from InSAR method development (i.e., remote sensing of ground motion) to early development of terrestrial planets.

Part (2) will review concepts, both venerable and recent, in the philosophy of Earth science exploration, as well as discuss how these concepts are incorporated in our group’s research approaches. Foci will include [A] the semiotics of Earth science; [B] proposed ground rules of model analysis and description for data poor research subjects such as early Earth tectonics; and [C] how we recognize and understand scientific excellence, and in turn how that informs teaching and learning approaches to spur future scientific discovery.
