Abstract: Rock Bridge is a conceptual model employed to analyze large-scale rock slides, of which the role was commonly found governing the mechanism of such mass movements. The physical experimental study presented herein is designed to study the failure mechanism of the locking section by measuring its basic characteristics. The concurrence of the Rock Bridge failure is the abrupt intensive energy release that results in the occurrence of the high-speed rock sliding. The acoustic emission (AE) signals were analyzed using Fast Fourier Transform analysis to characterize the cracking behaviors in terms of their frequency spectrums. Comparing the high-speed images and the AE frequency spectrum characteristics, the low normalized peak amplitude with high peak frequency (LH) and HH signals corresponded to macro-cracks and the LL and HL signals corresponded to micro-cracks, while the ML signals related to friction among rock cracks. In addition, the LH and ML can be taken as efficient precursor factors for early warning of rock failure.
