Hot dry rock (HDR) is an abundant geothermal energy resource, which is promising to replace fossil fuels in the near term. Enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is the most effective technique to mine heat from HDR and the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling between the working fluid and HDR reservoir plays a vital role in EGS. In this study, we developed a THM coupling model by coordinating boundary element method, finite volume method and finite element method, to simulate the long-term performance of EGS. Based on the proposed model, some key issues encountered in EGS, e.g. efficiency of heat extraction, induced seismicity and economic assessment, can be studied in detail.
