Prof. Malone, Andrew

Adjunct Professor/MSc Admissions Tutor

Dr Malone joined the department in 1998 to manage the new MSc in Applied Geosciences. Previously head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, he helped devise the slope safety management system that contributed to the great reduction in death toll from landslides in Hong Kong.

Dr Malone’s early career, after obtaining his PhD at Imperial College, was in civil engineering contracting and consulting in the UK. After 20 years of public service in Hong Kong he resumed consulting practice and latterly has advised on geotechnical problems in the Asian region (photo: landslide in 2010 at Ch 3+100 National Highway No. 3 Taiwan) and served as expert witness in Malaysia and Singapore.

His research field is the movement behaviour of large landslides.
