Marcus is a volcanologist that investigates the eruptive histories and behaviours of volcanoes and calderas at subduction zones using geochemistry, geochronology, petrology and tephrostratigraphy to improve records of past explosive eruptions in terms of their geochemical composition, frequency, magnitude and spatial footprint. These records provide the means to reveal the eruptive potential of volcanic centres, discern the most hazardous ones (those that will erupt sooner and/or more violently) and conduct short-term and long-term hazard assessments essential for the mitigation of future volcanic activity. His broader research interests examine the evolution of magma storage conditions and the role of volatile contents prior to the trigger of explosive eruptions. Ongoing work focuses on volcanoes and calderas along the Sumatran volcanic arc in Indonesia (or western Sunda volcanic arc).
